As British as fish and chips – Why we love the Land Rover Defender

From a cup of tea to fish and chips, a symbol of all things British, the Land Rover Defender has captivated people and inspired adventure all across the world.

Legend has it that Maurice Wilks, the company chairman, sketched out his vision of the perfect four-by-four vehicle for the civilian market while on a beach holiday in North Wales.

When the first model hit the market in 1947, the manufacturer had little idea of the treasure it had stumbled upon. This iconic vehicle played a vital role in rebooting the economy after the war, and contributed to the car industry’s dominance in the 1960s. It also transported soldiers, charmed the royal family, and with much gear crunching, taught many of us how to drive.

The preferred choice of modern explorers

Synonymous with a zest for life and overall confidence in one’s capabilities, the Land Rover embodies the adventurous spirit of free and independent individuals. It can take you where other cars cannot, making it ideal for off-road driving. The go-to vehicle for modern-day adventurers exploring the world’s most remote places, they have a stoic quality to them—if you’re driving somewhere isolated, where you really, really don’t want to be stranded, you want to be in a Defender.

However, most owners love the Land Rover Defender because they are passionate about the environment, the great outdoors, or simply owning an incredible car that can tackle any terrain.

They become part of the family

The relationship between owner and Land Rover Defender is mostly one-sided; the car cannot talk or communicate verbally with its owner, but that does not mean that owners do not try. We name them and treat them like a family member. Every scratch and mechanical issue becomes a cherished memory, overshadowing even the most picturesque village in Southern France.

Your loyal companion

While there are more comfortable, faster, and less quirky cars out there, none match the character and storytelling ability of the Defender. Dependable, tough, and faithful, Land Rovers are more than just vehicles – they are our loyal companions.

Our love for the Land Rover Defender

Land Rovers have been used for many important jobs, but there can be none more important than our final journey. Bringing our love of the Land Rover to the funeral industry and beyond, our Defender Hearse and support vehicle are quite unique.

They combine the rugged and timeless appeal of a Land Rover with the solemnity of a funeral procession. The result are vehicles that pay tribute to an adventurous spirit, whilst creating the most memorable farewell.

Land Rover Defender – a vehicle on which the sun never sets

Many years later, the Land Rover’s legacy continues to grow. Following 67 years of manufacturing, the final Land Rover Defender rolled off the production line in Solihull in January 2016, amid cheers and tears of production workers and Land Rover enthusiasts all over the world.

A vehicle on which the sun will never set, at that moment, the Defender was instantly transformed from a mass product to a beloved vintage collectible.
